editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Thousands of keen locals, young and old took a rare opportunity to go behind-the-scenes at the Nelson Police Station on Saturday. Children were posing for photographs in police hats and vests, took a trip through the cellblock, watched on as a pretend offender was tasered, met the police dog, ran through an obstacle course, and were toured around the city in the back of a police car. All of those activities and more were part of a nationwide police open day, where 12 stations opened their doors to the community. Area commander Steve Greally estimated somewhere between 5000 and 6000 people visited the Nelson station during the four hours, and put his support behind the event happening again. “It really surpassed my expectations,” he says. “It was just a great day and the sun was out which was fantastic. I think people got to see the police in a different light, and saw different aspects of what we do and how we do it.” Steve says the event did a lot to build the trust in police and strengthen the already positive relationship they have with the community. “It’s about better engaging with the community that we have and I think people realize we are just part of the community itself, we’re not separate. Richmond drivers are seeing red as a result of a computer glitch that is disrupting the timing of the traffic lights on Gladstone Rd and the Richmond Deviation. Tasman District Council transportation engineer Gary Clark says that the New Zealand Transport Agency changed the software controlling the lights and it is creating longer waits for many drivers. He says the main problem is that lights are changing too quickly frustrating drivers turning from Queen St and Oxford St onto Gladstone Rd. “The lights have got out of sequence and they need to be tweaked,” Gary says. “I think NZTA had a purge of the computer systems and it changed the timing so I’ve asked them to have a look at it.” NZTA’s Mark Owens confirmed on Monday that there has been a problem with the lights caused by new software they installed to modify the

Mark says NZTA are investigating the problem and hope to have it fixed “in the next few days”. Gary says they will also be talking to NZTA about changing the lights so that drivers are permitted to make a left turn into Queen St from the Richmond Deviation. The left turn was prohibited when the lights were installed at the McGlashen Ave intersection. “The main problem is drivers who are unfamiliar with the road’s layout. The search for the region’s top eateries, bars, chefs and bar staff is on. Nominations for the 2013/14 Nelson Hospitality Awards open next week and organisers say excitement is building in the industry. The awards are held every two years and have various judging methods, including competition for junior chefs, expert judging for the head chef award and a public vote for the top restaurant and bar award, via voting forms printed in Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly and Motueka Golden Bay Guardian.
The awards are the pinnacle for the industry and are organised by Hospitality New Zealand. Organiser Jeanette Swift says the awards will be a great way for members of the public to have their say about the region’s best. “We’re really excited and speaking with people in the industry we know it will be incredibly popular. It’s a great event and really important for our industry.” The first nomination form will be printed in Waimea Weekly next week and nominations will close on July 11.

Broods return for one-off gig They’ve sold out shows across the United States and toured with Ellie Goulding, and now Broods are returning to Nelson for a one-off performance this Saturday. Broods is made up of brother/sister duo Caleb and Georgia Nott, who both attended Garin College. Last year, Broods signed international record deals with Capitol in the US and Polydor in the UK, and their debut single Bridges has already surpassed one million plays on their SoundCloud page. The 500 tickets for the Broods concert were quick to be snapped up, selling out in just a matter of days. Nathan Telford, the event manager for Nelson Underage, who is promoting the show in collaboration with Smokefreerockquest and Nelson City Council, says it will be a very special occasion. “To bring back an international act of this calibre is really a once in a lifetime experience,” he says. “The response from young people all over Nelson has been ecstatic.”

Festival raises $29k for charity
The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival exceeded organiser’s expectations with an impressive $29,000 raised – which was donated to community groups last week. Not only does the festival celebrate the region’s produce with local wines, food, beer and music but the money raised makes a substantial difference to the community; helping some of the Nelson and Tasman region’s hardest working groups and volunteers do their jobs. This year saw a 3500-4000 strong crowd come out to celebrate summer and the new “back to basics” approach, which not only created a hugely successful day, but provided the Rotary Club of Richmond with the platform needed to

bring the festival back for good. “We definitely have it scheduled for next year and the theme will be the same. It’s a local event but we aren’t looking to make it bigger, we are looking to make it better,” says Richmond Rotary’s Kevin Gear. This year’s funds were given out to the beneficiaries at a special evening, with $10,000 going to Nelson Marlborough Helicopter Rescue, $2500 to Wanderer’s Sports Club, $2500 to the Brightwater Rural Fire Force, $1000 to Brightwater School and $1000 to the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust.
Several other organisations and groups received donations too, including St John, Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, HYPE (helping young people at events) Nelson YMCA, Waimea Harriers and the Brightwater Hall. With such positive feedback given from both stallholders and the public, next year’s Brightwater Wine and Food Festival promises to be better than ever and to once again provide the community with significant funds. With improvements to the venue underway and an emphasis on offering the best local produce, make sure you note down Sunday 15 February on next year’s calendar as a day not to be missed.

Direct entry to Queen St ‘essential’ A town gateway with direct entry into Queen St from Gladstone Rd and the Richmond Deviation is essential for the future of the Richmond town centre, according to a draft report commissioned by the Tasman District Council. The report was compiled by council staff after consultation with retailers, landowners and urban designers and outlines a 20 year vision for the future of Richmond’s town centre. It describes eight initiatives that are key to the town’s future and changing the “convoluted and relatively illegible” entrance into Richmond was at the top of the list. The council held a workshop on the report last week and one of the retailer’s representatives, Phil Taylor, agrees the entranceway to Richmond is “a real shortcoming” for the town. Phil, who is also the chairman of Nelson Tasman Tourism, says visitors are by-passing Richmond because “there is no welcoming front door to the

town” and that’s costing retailers money. “On average, visitors to the Tasman district spend $500,000 a day and 70 per cent of that is on retail, food and beverages. Those visitors are the lifeblood of places like Motueka but they are largely driving right past Richmond because there’s nothing to say come in and visit our town.” The report says improving access into Richmond will allow the low-speed car traffic to easily enter and leave Queen St as support for retailers, and create a flow of people past shop-fronts that is necessary for commercial success. It states that the convoluted access provides a poor first impression for visitors and isolates Queen St. Council transportation engineer Gary Clark says they are looking at a number of options for improving the entranceway to Richmond, which “is critical as far as the Tasman District Council is concerned”. However, Gary says they will have to design the new entranceway in conjunction with the New Zealand Transport Agency and Nelson City Council because it will have to fit into the wider traffic network. MP: Difficult roads stunting growth Nelson will lose a clear urban centre if the region’s roads aren’t sorted out, says Nelson MP Nick Smith. Speaking about the cycling and walkway options for Rocks Rd delivered to Nelson City Council, Nick says the council has been sending “mixed signals” to the government. He says the council needs to drop all plans for the waterfront until a southern arterial highway, through Victory, is built. “What we’ve seen over the past decade, with the combination of difficult transport links and issues like parking, is that more and more of the retail spend is occurring in Richmond. We have a little
bit of a parochial interest that we need to rise above, in that while that might suit Richmond, I don’t want to see Nelson develop long-term like Hastings and Napier, where you’ve lost a clear urban centre for the region.” Nick says the three options for a walking cycleway presented to the Nelson City Council should be scrapped and the council should instead focus its energy on lobbying central government to reopen talks around building the long talked-about southern arterial route. “The idea of converting Rocks Rd into a boulevard with a proper cycleway and walkway is hugely exciting and will
transform Nelson’s iconic waterfront. However, this vision is only realistic from a financial, safety and design perspective if the existing State Highway is relocated to the southern link route,’’ he says. But councillor Eric Davy, the chair of the works and infrastructure committee, ruled that out, recommending that two of the options go out for public consultation next month. The options range in price from $9 million to $14 million, with the third option ruled out by the council as it had an estimated cost of between $33 and $47 million.

Arts fest is a success
Garin College students turned off their laptops and took a break from regular school work on Thursday and Friday, instead, taking part in their annual Mahi Toi event. Students are able to choose two, three, four of five activities to take part in during the two days. Those include performing arts, making cupcakes, designing wearable art out of recycled materials, flax weaving, constructing bottle rockets, and a whole lot of other fun workshops. Lindsey Furlong-Taylor, the teacher in charge of Mahi Toi, says it was a compulsory event for students, but something that everyone looked forward to each year. “Everyone was on task and it was a good time, everyone had good fun and that’s what it’s all about.” She says this year’s event was fantastic and it concludes with a performance on June 26 and 27 at the Hope Community Church, highlighting the “best of the best”.

Quiz night postponed as more prizes roll in The “quiz world championships” are coming to town, but not this Friday as originally planned. The “World Championship Quiz Night” is to help raise money for the “Dad’s new lungs” campaign for local man Mike Corkill but, due to a huge amount of interest, Mike has decided to postpone it to “get it right”. He says he’s had thousands of dollars worth of prizes donated, including a PS3, local art, travel vouchers and landscaping products, and he needs more time to make it a “special night”. The six children of Mike Corkill have been helping organise the quiz and joke that it’s been officially sanctioned by Ukrainian authorities, but they are still waiting on confirmation from every other country, including the Russians. The quiz will be held at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms and Mike says he’ll let Weekly readers know the exact date when they have firmed up the details. Mike needs to raise $100,000

Nelson City Council will see if they can get some “flexibility” from Cricket World Cup organisers to allow local athletes to use the athletics track during its duration. Cricket World Cup has an exclusivity period for the whole Saxton Oval venue, which includes the athletics track, from 21 days prior to the first match on February 16 and, bizarrely, another ten days after the final one on March 5. That means track and field athletes will be un-
able to use the athletics track during the peak period of their own season, even though there are just three cricket games being held in Nelson, and they are next door at the cricket oval. When it was made public that the track will be out of use for nearly 50 days, running coach Greg Lautenslager said it would basically be “ruining” the sport. “Without the track you don’t have the sport, so a compromise needs to be made,” he said in February.
And a compromise could be on the cards, with Nelson City Council saying they will explore the possibility of some “flexibility” with Cricket World Cup organisers. “We understand there may have been some communications problems within the Athletics Trust. They have recently expressed concerns to the mayor and deputy mayor,” a council spokesperson says. “There may be some flexibility and we will continue to look for an option that works for all parties.”

By Ross Ferguson, Richmond Community Church. ‘Laughter: The Best Medicine’ has been a popular column in Reader’s Digest for many years, but to go back several thousand years, God had it written down for us as a key prescription for helping us live healthy and whole lives. Proverbs 17: 22 says; “A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones.” This is now well understood and explained by modern medicine and physiology and studies show that people who laugh more are healthier, sleep better, live longer, have better relationships and make better decisions. Today more people than ever are looking for natural health remedies that are effective and inexpensive and yet they have overlooked one of the best medicines available that is safe and has no side effects! What are some of the benefits of laughter? Sabotage on mountain bike track: This person is sick! Needs help! It would seem to me that he (she) has more issues with mountain bikers than some debris over the walking track. How about not being so uselessly lazy and shift the stuff which is not too large to handle, to allow access. (If they can put barriers on the track, then they can also remove it.) Any other person would remove debris, as I would, being a walker, (no joke intended) and then contact the mountain bikers group or TDC and advise them of the problem. If the notes left were hand written, publish them, maybe the hand writing will be recognisable by someone. This person should be banned from these tracks. Has no one seen anything in either places? Club Waimea celebrates another top year Club Waimea has enjoyed another successful year despite a challenging economic environment thanks to some prudent management, good support from their staff and the vision of their founding members. The Lower Queen St club held their annual general meeting on May 25 and manager John Hewison says they ended 20132014 in a good position. John says Club Waimea’s membership remained steady at 1275 and they managed to balance the books despite experiencing “a tougher year than last year with people having less disposable income”. However, John says the club’s executive, directors and staff have all had to work hard to get through the year. “We have had very prudent management by the board and executive and that has been supported by a very loyal staff and membership. We are very fortunate to have staff who are passionate about the club and prepared to do anything to keep it running smoothly.” John says the club’s ability to “think outside the square” and make maximum use of their facilities is also one of the keys to

Club Waimea has formed partnerships with a number of other clubs and organisations who use the facilities creating a win-win situation. “We can’t remain the exclusive domain of our members because we need to capitalise on every available opportunity to use our facilities. Our amenities are open
to the public but they need to come and talk to us first. “For example, last weekend we had the karters come in here. They had a race meeting in Nelson and we ended up with 150 extra people coming into the club.” John says the club has also been fortunate to have a good relationship with their suppliers who

have an excellent understanding of the club’s requirements. “We are lucky with all our suppliers like Waimea Estates, Bays Breweries, Westmeat and NBS. I remember when we were planning our refurbishment and NBS came to the party when no other bank wanted to know us.” But John concedes good manage-
ment and hard work would not have been enough to secure the future of the club without the vision of its original members who purchased the land in 1970 and opened the caravan park in 1979. “We owe a lot to the original members. Their vision is reaping rewards now and has set the club up for the future.”

Dress up night in July Every two months or so the club has a themed dress up night with prizes to be won. The most recent one held in May was based on an English theme and on the menu Barnicoat Bistro had pea, pie and pud, plus fish and chips done up in newspaper. On the occasion Club

In New Zealand 31 per cent of the adult population volunteer; within the Nelson Tasman region alone millions of hours are volunteered, and without this support many of the services and facilities we take for granted could not be provided. The theme for the 2014 NVW is “Nakuterourounau te rouroukaoraai te tangata.” Translated it means, With your contribution and my contribution the people will live. The whakataukī (Maori proverb) refers to co-operation and the combination of resources to get ahead. It suggests that if we pool our ideas, with equal respect for all parties, we will get a better outcome and everyone will benefit. Winter Bowls at Wakefield Bowling Club The winter bowling season has started at Wakefield Bowling Club. What a great activity and lovely setting on a sunny winter’s day. Winter membership allows play on the synthetic green at anytime, plus entry to Club Championships on Saturdays and Interclub on Monday afternoons. Casual players are welcome, paying green fees each time, and can use the green at will and attend Mini Tournaments on Wednesdays and Fridays (names in by 12.15pm.) Coaching is available in organised sessions on Wednesday mornings or by arrangement with club coaches. Full day tournaments are held on the first and third Sunday of each month, teams entered in advance. The first of these was held in May, sponsored by Wakefield Health Centre, and a
two day tournament was held on Queens Birthday weekend. The first winter tournament held on 18 June, sponsored by the Wakefield Health Centre, was won by the local team of Ron Charles, Peter Sisterson and Diane Holland. The Queen’s Birthday Weekend two-day Fours Tournament, with visiting teams from as far as Christchurch and Greymouth, was won by the Motueka team of Tony and Craig Fowler, Sheryl Riordan and Moana Cross. The brain testing chess tournament By Liam Berry (Year 6) On Monday, 26 May, at Wakefield School hall, some primary school students from the Nelson area came together to compete in a tournament that people say takes your brain to the very limits of thinking. They were all there for a game called chess. It was run by Bruce from Chess Power. Each person got to play 7 games, with 1 point for a win, half a point for a
draw and none for a loss. The three top players of the tournament were all Tasman home schoolers. The top player from Wakefield school was Gian Strasser. The tournament wasn’t just chess, chess and more chess. There were competitions you could enter, such as “Guess how many chess pieces in the jar” and “Who’s the quickest to set up a chess board.” Overall, everyone had a great day and everyone’s brains were exhausted by the time the tournament was over.
Young reporters by Sarah Ducray (Year 6) At Wakefield School we have a group of eleven awesome writers that find interesting topics around the school and community to write about, for our school blog and other publications. Recently, Waimea Weekly reporter, Phillip Rollo, came to visit this school reporters group to tell them about the job of a real reporter. They were all fascinated to hear about his job and the group was buzzing with excitement from the tips he gave them about being a better reporter, including how to interview, how to prepare for an interview and how to put good beginnings and endings to reports. One of the school reporters Paige commented, “I was so excited to meet a real live reporter” Thank you Phillip, for sharing your knowledge and experiences. Vikki Pickering (You and Your Dog) and the Wakefield Town and Country Vet are getting together to support the Second Chance organisation with a community seminar on July 10 at 6:30pm, where dog owners can take away from Vikki’s presentation a greater understanding of how their pets learn best. Tickets are only $10 and can be picked up from the Wakefield vet, with all proceeds going to Second Chance, an organisation that works to find Nelson pound dogs homes. They will also be there on the night to raise awareness for
their cause and promote the fact that these dogs are available for re-housing to new families. The Wakefield Town and Country Vet now have consulting hours on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, while the clinic is open Monday-Thursday 8:30am-5pm. They also have a wide variety of stock for the care of your pet and can order in products as you need them. Come and support the community evening and learn about why your dogs behaves as it does and how positive reinforcement can help you train them.
An exciting Friday the 13th By Emma Davies and Aria McNamara (Year 5) On Friday 13th June Wakefield School held its annual cross country. It was cold and muddy but the sun shone brightly. The juniors were first. “Honk!”... The race had begun! Nervous senior students warmed up, as the junior children ran down the finishing chute. Many parents were cheering and encouraging their exhausted children as they crossed the line. The most exciting, anticipated race was the last race of the day, the year 6 girls’ and boys’ races. The clear leader of the year six girls was Kerby Rogers, while Dion Taikato had to fight harder for the boys’ title. Now the top 8 winners from years four, five and six will compete against schools in the area next week.

Steve & Wendy are pleased to welcome their new apprentice, Liam Smith, to the team Liam is born and bred in Wakefield, so is a “local” and proud of it. His love affair with cars, and all things mechanical, began when he was around twelve years old. Having grown up with cars has been an important part of his life and always at Speedway, this has led to Liam regularly racing stockcars at Speedway. He is very happy to be continuing his apprenticeship training at popular local garage Wakefield Auto Services owned by Steve and Wendy Peterson and has fitted in well with the friendly team there. Liam has already had 18 months experience doing pre trade apprentice training at NMIT Nelson and will also attend night classes and block courses throughout his apprenticeship. He plans to be fully qualified in three-four years. So keep an eye out for Liam.

The Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park will be a popular place this Sunday when riders from around the Nelson and Tasman regions converge on Bethany Camp for the Nelson Mountainbike Club’s annual SixHour Mid Winter Breakout. Last year, a record 547 riders completed a total of 2365 laps around a five kilometre circuit of the park during the individual and team’s six-hour race. Although numbers are down slightly this year, the event remains the most popular cycling event in the region and organiser Wayne Pool says that’s because it is a fun event that targets a wide range of riders. “We changed the course last year because we wanted an easier climb and to make it technically easier so that we could accommodate all riders,” Wayne says. “We wanted to promote the race as an event for all abilities - it’s not just for the speedsters.”
Wayne says the course is also more user-friendly than last year because the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park’s volunteers have been working hard to improve the surface of the track. Last year, parts of the course became muddy after heavy rain the day before the race and that put “some of the recreational riders off ”, he says. “It is a mid-winter event and there is some rain forecast so we have to expect some mud. But the guys from Kaiteriteri have done a great job weather-proofing the track so we’re hoping it will be in good condition.” Although the event is aimed primarily at recreational riders, the pace at the front end of the race is certain to be hot with some top class riders entered. Wayne says he is also pleased with the number of young riders entered this year with a large contingent from Nelson Prep competing. The race starts at 10am.

Richmond Athletic have bowed out of the ASB Chatham Cup at the third round, but coach Marc Evans was full of praise after pushing Coastal Spirit right to the edge. The Mainland Premier League side from Christchurch were firm favourites going into the game, and had actually knocked out Richmond at this same stage of the competition just a few years ago. But on Sunday at Jubilee Park you’d have thought the two football teams were at the same level. Richmond scored first through Keegan Hollis and they were up for challenge in most aspects of the game, before Coastal scored two late goals, one after Richmond’s Dion Keetley was shown a red card. “We gave it everything but once you go down to ten men it’s really hard,” says Marc. “They were a decent side but our boys fought hard.” Marc says Coastal were bigger, quicker and stronger than any side they had faced in the Nelson Pine Industries division one competition, so it was a good experience for his young players. Young lock off to top academy Wanderers lock Sam Liebezeit will be getting some help from the best in the business during the next two weeks, after receiving a scholarship worth close to $6000 for the IRANZ academy in Palmerston North. The 18 year old former Waimea College student is in his first year of senior rugby, and thanks to the support of apparel partner BLK, he will be spending 12 days at IRANZ, before returning for the business end of the club rugby season. Peter Rakich, the managing director of BLK NZ, says Sam is the first recipient of the scholarship, which covers the cost of travel, the course fees and includes a pack of BLK travel gear and apparel. “Sam is an outstanding emerging player with a number of physical attributes which can’t be coached. Sam has demonstrated a willingness to listen and learn and that makes him an ideal candidate to apply the vast array of

knowledge and experience that the IRANZ courses will provide,” he says. The IRANZ Academy is the first truly international rugby academy and has a long list of high calibre coaches. Sam will participate in the elite players’ course, which is aimed at aspiring professional players aged 18 and over, and/or academy players who need high performance specialization. His mentor there will be former All Black Reuben Thorne, who is overseeing the locks and blindside flankers, while All Blacks Sevens captain DJ Forbes is looking after the rest of the loosies. Sam, who is 2.01m tall, is a current member of the Tasman Rugby Academy and had hoped to attend IRANZ in order to build on his current skill set. “It’s a good stepping stone. A lot of good players have gone through there. BLK put their hand up to put me their and I just hope it will help me get noticed,” he says.

Weightlifters off to South Islands
The Nelson Weightlifting Club will send nine competitors to the South Island Championship this weekend, as the sport rides a new wave of momentum. The Nelson Weightlifting club began as a not-for-profit sports club in the late 1970s by Alistair Nalder and John Callaghan who both represented New Zealand at international events including the Commonwealth Games together. And while Nelson produced another international, with Lester Keene going on to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games in 1990, the club struggled to gain more lifters during that period and decided to place its remaining equipment into storage. But Olympic weightlifting has hit a resurgence right across the country, and now club president Ed Keene is hoping to bring the sport back to its glory days in Nelson. With a core group of 11 lifters, the club has managed to unearth some new talent during the 12 months it has been operating, with Luke Smith and Jaydene Nepia both representing New Zealand at the recent Oceania Championship in New Caledonia. Ed hopes all of the nine competitors heading to Christchurch this weekend for the South Island Championship will qualify for nationals, and he’s on the lookout for more potential weightlifters, with the goal of having 15 qualify for nationals this year. Makos contract for WOB forward The saying that “actions speak louder than words” could easily apply to Waimea’s big ball-running blindside Peter Samu. His game is all about physicality, making storming runs through the middle of the park and big hits around the ruck, and he’s certainly caught the eye during his first season in Nelson. The 22 year old Melbourne-born loose forward arrived in the region with a one year Tasman Makos contract. He’s played club rugby for Randwick in Sydney, and played trial games for the Waratahs, but Peter’s Makos deal is the first professional contract of his career. “If I can get a few games then this will be the highest level I’ve played at,” Peter says. “I was play-

ing up in Sydney and I thought I’d come over. My family thought it’d be a good opportunity.” In Australia, Peter had been on a free training deal with the Waratahs, where he’d practice with the Super Rugby team in the hope of picking up a contract. “I was just doing it for free. I was trying to get one of the wider training spots. I played a few trial games, including one in Auckland which was pretty good.” But that never materialized into a contract, and the player who is just as comfortable at the back of the scrum, is now eager to make a name for himself in Tasman.
Even though he had been living in Melbourne, England and Sydney, Peter is well aware of the Tasman Makos. His older brother Lualua Vailoaloa made six appearances at halfback for the Makos over two seasons. He will have plenty of competition in his position, with the entire loose forward trio picking up Super Rugby contracts this year, but Peter believes that is a good thing and he was looking forward to playing alongside Tevita Koloamatangi, Shane Christie and Liam Squire. “It excites me. It’ll be good to test myself against those guys playing at that level.” And while he’s only signed for one year, he hopes he can perform well enough to earn an extension and stick around long term.
